Where Kovy Stands

Lots of different things being read into Kovalchuk's post-game comments. I don't really know what all the fuss is about; I thought he was just giving a straightforward opinion, as Captain, on what we need to do in the off-season. From Ben Wright's Blueland Blog, the comments that have worried some:

How do you feel about the show the team put on in the final game of the season?

"I think we're playing good and we win, scored a couple nice goals, and Karppa played well, and our fans deserved it. But like I said, we're so much tired to be out, you know. The vacation is so long and I just want to be there. Hopefully this summer we're going to do something to build our team. I think already we made some great moves at the deadline and we kept the right guys here and everybody worked so hard the last 35 games. I think we can play on a higher level."

What things specifically do you want to see happen?

"You know what? We need to sign some free agents- spend some money. If you look on the roster of all the teams who are going to compete for the playoffs- but not just the playoffs because I don't want to compete for just the playoffs- I want to compete for a Cup. I think the city deserves it. Hopefully we can sign some free agents."

Do you think you need to be closer to the top of the cap than the bottom of the cap?

"Oh yeah. I don't know. I'm not an owner. But I know for sure we need more players. Like I said, we got, I think, one of the best fourth lines in the league. Boults, Slates, and Thorbsy work hard, but we need more top guys and I think we'll be really good."

We DO need another top six forward. Might I suggest this guy? He'd fit in quite well with John Anderson's style, and after leaving L.A. for Calgary I'm sure he yearns for warmer climes.

The only comment that I saw that concerned me was the one that said about the fans, "they appreciated what we did tonight, but I don't think they appreciated what we did all season long."

That could be interpreted as Kovy saying that the fans aren't good enough, or it could be interpreted as Kovy's broken English attempt to say that the fans rightly didn't appreciate the lackluster play in the first half.

It appears that the Czar has been reading the Chronicle, and particularly the writings of Razor Catch Prey when I praised the Greek Gods line as one of the best checking lines in the game and stated we needed a true top center and an upgrade on the third line.

Can't knock the man's taste.

I'm pretty sure what he meant was that the Thrashers weren't worthy of a standing ovation, or anything else positive, in the first half of the season.

Don't we need someone on the right wing? Having seen the stats, that's where we were weak.

Wayne-

I'm sure Cammalleri wouldn't be averse to switching to right wing.

Anon-

Filppula would be quite nice as well.
