Before tonight's victory, I was sitting in the CNN Center, as is my custom, with the rest of the Blueland Chronicle staff. As is our custom, we were drinking and conversing.
At some point Monsieur Catalogues said something about how he'd like a Russian oligarch billionaire like Roman Abramovich to buy the Thrashers. We've talked about this several times before, including a few times on this blog.
An appealing fantasy, perhaps. But maybe a soon-to-be reality, given the following late night Tweets from Puck Daddy's Dmitry Chesnokov:
Atlanta's owner Seydel 2 SovSport: I think there's a good possibility we can keep players in ATL.Done it w/Hawks, b able 2 do it w/Thrashers
***
Thrashers' owner Seydel 2 SovSport: "Chasing the Stanley cup doesn’t work, being loyal to your team is the better route to go."
***
Seydel: "I think it would be a benefit if it was a RUS investor. It would 2 fantastic if I was a RUS player & I had a RUS owner on the team"
***
Just read an interview w/one of Thrashers owners that will be published in SovSport. Could it be ATL will be the 1st team w/Rus owner?
Ummm what dude? Does this mean the Thrashers will soon be owned, or at least invested in, by some very rich Russian?
The team might need this.

As long as Ron Hainsey doesn't go around John Terry-ing it up with other players' wives, I can support possibly having Russian ownership.
Somebody got Seydel to talk??
Holy cheese wiz!!
I'd rather the new owner be from Georgia or Kazakhstan. Or Elena Dementieva.
I know this is of great import, but how do you bump down "triceratops-laser-shooting impressive"...I'm aghast.
Mr. Speaker,
I believe that you must differentiate from Georgia (former USSR) or the state we reside in.
I'm sorry, but I'd rather have owners with local/regional ties...What would stop him from moving the team when things go bad? Besides, Atlanta has NO Russian community to speak of, so why would he come here? This Russian guy would be better off buying the Islanders, where you have a Russian community in Brighton Beach...
It's not meant as an entirely serious post, Wayne, though the central issue here is money and what it can pay for. Some of us simply imagine that the Thrashers will become the hockey equivalent to Chelsea FC if we have a Russian owner.
Also:
If we're talking financially stable owners with endless pools of money, I'd take an Indian or Chinese or Brazilian owner over a Russian one.
In an ideal world, I'd love a stable rich person from Atlanta to do it, but sadly there just isn't much of that around these days. Symptom of the US's comical economic decline.
Morty, check the above post for the future of hockey in ATL.
I got ya rich new owners right here!!!
