What causes the Thrashers to play so erratically?
Could it be the recent ultra-spike of Pig Flu cases here in Georgia?
Someone ought to do a study.
P.S. There is still no way we're making the playoffs. I ask again: what does 9th place mean for this team? Should we consider this season a modest success, business as usual, or a disaster?

I still don't think we are making it either. For the last time folks, we are not 2 points out of a playoff spot. We are 3 points out due to the fact that we don't own any tie-breakers. All other teams have a game at hand. We have an awful schedule. Not a good combination.
But we can hope against hope, I suppose...
I prefer to hope than despair at the moment, even though I know that with our schedule, the playoffs would be neigh miraculous.
Not hoping can sometimes be a very liberating thing.
Anyone seen the standings of our first ever TBC Fantasy Hockey league? Heeeennnngggghhhh?!?!?!?!?
I'm sure Nik Antropov did absolutely nothing for me last night, as I've liberated myself from Fantasy Hockey by abandoning hope. WOLVERINES.
I think someone needs a hug.
Who needs hope when you have numbing resignation? We lost out on the playoffs when we "steamed" our way to a big fat egg turd against both Boston and Toronto. Not to mention that pesky 6 game winless streak. But we could have overcome that with a win over BOS.
We are most definitely screwed at this point, but stranger things have happened. Like this team winning every time they are counted for dead. But I don't need hope because I'm done getting my hopes up. But I'm far from despair when we've shown potential. I have more despair when I think about the ability of our management to convince 2 or 3 key UFA's to come here and make us a bona fide playoff contender. Kovy anyone?
0 pleasant exercise of hope and joy!
For great were the auxiliars which then stood
Upon our side, we who were strong in love;
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven; 0 times,
In which the meagre, stale, forbidding ways
Of custom, law, and statute took at once
The attraction of a Country in Romance;
When Reason seem'd the most to assert her rights
When most intent on making of herself
A prime Enchantress to assist the work,
Which then was going forward in her name,
Not favour'd spots alone, but the whole earth
The beauty wore of promise, that which sets,
To take an image which was felt, no doubt,
Among the bowers of paradise itself,
The budding rose above the rose full blown.
If someone had told all of us before the season that Kovalchuk would basically lie about his intentions to stay and string along the organization to the point where they end up with .60 on the dollar, that they would trade Lehtonen for a defensive prospect who would not play a minute for the Thrashers this year, that they would have two winless streaks of 6+ games this year, Slava Kozlov would become a rotting corpse that gets propped up at parties, and Todd White would score roughly 1/3 of his points from last year and we still ended up in 9th and eliminated the last week of the season, I'm pretty sure we would be fairly happy with the net result, especially where this team was for the last two seasons.
Also, this might be crazy thinking, but why wouldn't Washington want to play us in the playoffs? They have owned the Thrashers this year. Maybe they don't go all out in their games against us hoping the Thrashers get in and play them. Four points right there. Just a thought...
By the way, because of the Kovalchuk and Lehtonen trades, this is probably the deepest, youngest team the Thrashers have ever had. Even if this year ends without a playoff berth, I think it's been a success. No hockey "expert" picked the Thrashers to be this high up the standings, plus, even finishing 9th, it still brings a top 10 draft pick because the East is so weak.
I think our chances of getting in the playoffs are slim, but definitely possible. We need to go 4-1 against the Caps who have NOTHING to play for, a Pittsburgh team with a few injuries, and what should be a very emotional game against Kovalchuk and an aging Brodeur.....again, slim, but possible.....then you only have to hope that one of 3 teams plays poorly, and Montreal and Phily are struggling. If you ask me, as long as tomorrow night's Philly v. Habs game stays in regulation, we have a chance.
Realisticly, we know what will happen. We will win tonight in Cap-land, beat Pitt on Saturday afternoon, and then lay an egg against the Devils at home when it really matters......beat the Caps again on the road and then come home for final game needing a win AND a Philly or Habs loss in their last games against Detroit and Buffalo respectively.....or maybe we'll just lose tonight and it will be over (unless Philly and Boston lose tonight too)......aaaargh.
Jay and h-
Who knows? Back in the pre-season I speculated that the Thrashers could finish anywhere from 8th place to 12th place, and whaddayaknowthatsexactlywhatshappening.
We do have a chance, but...let's just say I won't be shocked if the Thrashers don't make it. That said: as Jay points out, there is a fine young core here. I wouldn't be upset with a 9th place finish. Finishing in a 9th place would speak very well of the team. What I fear is what will happen in the off season with UFAs etc.

What!?!?!
