The Atlanta Thrashers have traded defenceman Mathieu Schneider the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for second and third round picks.
Schneider previously played for the Canadiens from the 1989-90 season until 1995, winning a Stanley Cup with the team in 1993. He was traded to the Islanders in 1995.

Actually, we're getting Anaheim's second rounder. So let's hope the continue to fall.
We couldn't realistically hope for more than a pick or two for Schneider. He's a UFA after this season, so we're only trading away 3 months of play from him, and even if the Habs have a leg up on resigning him, he may well retire after this season.
Add to that the fact that he's been racking up the holding/hooking penalties like Norm Maracle racks up frequent diner points at Tim Hortons. He's still got a lot of talent, works hard, and is a smart defenseman, but he doesn't have the speed to keep up anymore and it shows in the number and type of PIMs he gets.
Awesome, I'd much rather see us develop our younger defensemen like Valabik or Oystrik than having Schneider take up space and money (holy shit, were we really paying him $5.7M/year for that piss-poor performance this season?) I think our defense actually just improved with that trade. Now, for the issue of Exelby...
