The (Unprecedented) Depth of USA Hockey

Why is it that in the aftermath of our glorious Gold Medal win against Canada last night I've seen three different forms of media use Hulk Hogan to summarize the win? I truly love this place we call the Planet Earth.

Now then. For those of you that watched the Thrashers instead of watching the World Junior game, shame on you. You can miss one game when something this special is going on. What an unbelievable win for USA Hockey. And it could not have come at a better time. The World Junior tournament has had a hard time taking off in the States, and I'm really not sure why. They will play the games in Buffalo next time, and it is very important to pack the stands with American fans instead of those coming down from the border. No better way to get excitement than winning the Gold Medal, heeeennnnngggghhhh! We also won gold in the Under-17 tournament two days ago.... defeating Canada. For the first time ever, USA Hockey is creating a generation of player that not only hopes to win, but expects to win. Against the big boys. We are no longer intimidated. We are at the point, I believe, where we will consistently medal in tournaments. World Juniors, Olympics, World Cup... it doesn't matter. We now have the depth to make it happen.

To prove this point I have a little experiment for you. I believe if you take all the guys this year that did not make our Olympic team, and stack them up against the guys that played in '06, you could argue that you could make a better team. Here is our roster in '06:

Goalies: DiPietro, Esche, Grahame
D: Chelios, Hatcher, Leopold, Liles, Miller, Rafalski, Schneider, Hedican
F: Blake, Cole, Conroy, Drury, Gionta, Gomez, Guerin, Knuble, Modano, Parrish, Rolston, Tkachuk, Weight

Now, just at a quick glance let's take a gander at who didn't make the team this year:

Goalies: Anderson, Howard, Conklin
D: Whitney, Bogosian, Hainsey, Scuderi, Goligoski, Liles, Yandle, Carle
F: Gionta, Gomez, Guerin, Knuble, Rolston, Oshie, Okposo, Pommenville, Connolly, Byfuglien, Umberger, Tkachuk, Blake

OK, folks. Clearly our second team is not as deep as Canada's second team would be. But take a look at the two teams listed above and tell me that USA Hockey is not moving in the right direction. You could try and make the argument, but it just won't take. USA Hockey is here to stay. And the longer we go, the more and more you will see guys from Texas, California, Georgia, and a whole bunch of others states start churning out players. By the way, thank you Mr. Gretzky.

Getting back to last night's game for a moment: I have a little bone to pick with a man by the name of Pierre "Thunder Pants Shit Face I Can't Even Get A Job With The Minnesota Wild" McGuire. I heard on the radio this morning that he said during last nights game that the USA victory maybe was not deserved. If this is indeed true, here is my response: ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! Were we not Monster enough? Pop quiz asshole, what was the strongest team that Canada beat in regulation for the entire tournament? Answer: Switzerland. Wasn't deserved??? I'm sick and tired of the Canadians whining about every international tournament that doesn't go their way. You never heard Herb Brooks do that. By the way Pierre, have you forgotten that you were actually born in NEW JERSEY?!??! Sometimes I think you need a reminder of that.

But really, how 'bout those boys last night? How 'bout 'em? The Chronicle was all over this story to begin with when Jeremy Morin told us that Jack Campbell was the single greatest human being ever to walk the face of the Earth, other than Dean Blais of course. You really could go on and on and on about all of these guys and the way they played. They have set the stage for the Olympics, and this victory will inspire our team to play well. A team, by the way, that has a lot of the guys from our first Gold Medal in the World Juniors back in '04. Guys that expect to win in international hockey.

Guys that Blais.

Oh, and if you haven't noticed by now I'll spell it out for you:

YOU JUST GOT BLAISED CANADA!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Pierre MacGywer is a douche! He doesn't even deserve to have his name spelled correctly. And how does a guy born in Jersey get a name like "Pierre" anyway?

BLAIS ON SHOOTER! YOU GO WITH YOUR BAD SELF.

Hulk Hogan has been the symbol of Blaisin' victory at least since the days of ancient Rome.

Puck Daddy listed Pierre McGuirre's homer-ness (despite not actually being Canadian-born) as one of the top stories of the WJC before the first puck dropped.

Bob MacKenzie has been in a pissy mood since the game ended, too. Just check out his Twitter feed.

Canadians REALLY don't like losing to the US in hockey. Remember what it was like after the World Cup in '96? "Oh, it doesn't count because Mario Lemieux wasn't playing."

If Jeremy Morin's skating is the only thing keeping him from the NHL right now, we should sign Boris Valabik to a long term extension and buy him a harness so he can skate around with Morin strapped to his chest to handle the puck for him. We can play Max Max "Master Blaster" clips every time they score a goal.

JR has been saying (as Big Shooter did) that Drury was a mistake on the USA Olympic roster this time around. I totally disagree. You can't replace Drury's leadership and his winning spirit. The man loves playing for the USA and will not let us down.

Apparently David Backes recently beat up Johnathan Toews so bad the Canadian threw up twice in the penalty box afterwards. How about a rematch Feb 21?

Whoa now. Drury was ON my team. I just said he might not make the real team. Don't put words in my mouth or you will get Blaised.

I actually saw that Backes fight when it happened. Neither guy took their helmet off (both play with visors). Has this always happened because it just seems like the last 5-10 years guys have been doing that and I don't like it.

Toews is a sneaky-good puncher in NHL2009 for Wii. He actually got in some good licks against Lombardi and then Giordano(?). Of course, Iginla is a bad-ass. He worked me over as Byfuglien, but then again I don't know what I'm doing half the time with the controller!
