May I Call You Joe?

OK, I know this blog thingy here normally focuses on the Thrashers... and that is all well and good, but we would be remiss if nothing was said of the great Joe Sakic deciding to hang up his skates. I'll be honest, I thought he would come back for one more year. Thinking he didn't want to go out with the old snow blower accident, and also because the Olympics are next year. And there is some guy named Duchene that the torch needs to be passed to... but hey, who are we to judge JOE SAKIC?!?!?! I think even our loyal Red Wing fan reader Jointhead would agree that Joe is due his... well, uh... due.

So here's to ya Joe! No one handled themselves with more class, on or off the ice, than you did. One of the true good guys. All of us at The Blueland Chronicle salute you Sir:

A very fine send-off for Super Joe. I was waiting for either you or Razor to write the tribute.

This really took me by surprise. I thought Super Joe Sack Itch would come back for one last season and be a mentor to Duschene.

Knowing him, Joe will stay with the organization, possibly as an assistant coach. So he'll still be there to help Duschene along.

Silent Joe Sakic is one of if not the classiest guys in this great sport of ours. I'll always remember him refusing to so much as lift the Stanley Cup before immediately passing it to Ray Bourque.

Also, true story-

A long, long, time ago, I began calling Joe Sakic "Super Joe Sack Itch." Not as an insult, of course, as he was one of my favorite players on my favorite team in those days, but just joking around. Big Shooter thought I had a very uniquely warped mind to come up with that.

Around 1999 or 2000, Shooter and I ventured out west to Denver to catch an Avs/Stars game in the Pepsi Center. What a great experience. We got to chant "Patrick's better!" to Eddie the Weasel, watched a young Chris Drury deke out all five Stars plus Belfour on a single play to score the best goal any of us have ever seen, and had participated in a snowball fight.

But we were shocked to see a native Denverite walking down the aisle in our section wearing a #19 Avalanche jersey that read "Sack Itch" on the name plate. So I'm not so uniquely demented after all.
