In What Hour

So Mike Knobler says that Wednesday's game against Ottawa will be broadcast on TSN, which means the game will start at 7:30 instead of the customary weeknight start time of 7:00.

From there, he asks the fans of your Atlanta Thrashers which start time they prefer. Judging from the comments, it seems quite a lot of Thrashers fans are unhappy with the 7:00 start time during the week, for good and obvious reasons: the horrific traffic in and around Atlanta, the horrific traffic, and, and, the horrific traffic.

Your editor thinks all weeknight games should start at 7:30, for many of the same reasons, plus the fact that a later start time would give him more time to down the megalith beers from Gorin's in the CNN Center.

I absolutely detest afternoon games. I don't mind the 5:00 Sunday games, because 5:00 is technically early evening, and it gives one plenty of time to debauch oneself while staring at a gigantic Wolf Blitzer. For whatever reason I can't even go to a movie in the day-time; it just doesn't feel right. Hockey games, movies, etc. ideally have to wait until after dark in my personal universe.

At any rate, what do you folks think? Do you have a preferred starting time? If so, WHY?

Some dude in the comments suggested they move the arena out to the suburbs. Worst. Idea. Ever.

UPDATE: What do you think of national anthems before every game? Necessary? Which do you prefer (aesthetically speaking, not in some nationalist way): The Star-Spangled Banner or O Canada? Shouting "Knights!" during our anthem? As the kids say: pass or fail?

Moving the arena out is the dumbest idea ever. I don't care if you live in Gwinnett, move to the city. Also, people might want to come from the southern neighborhoods. Ugh, I'm sorry. I get pissed when people spat stupid stuff like that. 7:30 sounds good, why not? We have the worst traffic.

1) Beer @ Gorin's FTMFW

2) Arena -> Gwinnett or Marietta or Chattanooga or wherever. Personally I hate it, but it would probably draw in higher attendance.

3) "Knights" = obvi great, our cheers suck and we need something to distinguish ourselves.

4) Star Spangled Banner = greatest song ever written.

The response has always split 50/50 on the start time.

Like many of us who are productive members of society, I enjoy the 7:00 start time. I live over 1 hour away with no traffic and it makes it easier going to work early the next morning having the extra 1/2 hour. Those who are not productive members of society wouldn't know to care about things like that.

It is a little tough getting to the arena some times. My work schedule is pretty good, so on most game days I can make it to where I leave at 5:00. Even travelling nearly the ENTIRE GA 400, there is only about 1 game out of the year when I am late. I understand not everyone is fortunate to leave early enough.

People bitch and moan about attendance and the start time, but it really doesn't matter. You win, people come to the games. Lose and they don't. No matter what time the game starts.

I mean I'd have the game at 11:00 if I had it my way. Things would be better for everybody if Atlanta had commuter trains like up North and MARTA actually went somewhere rather than two lines that go nowhere most of the time. I long for the day for a train between Athens and Atlanta, and I don't even like Athens.

Monsieur-

You're right: there are a lot of issues here that don't have that much to do with the Thrashers and the ATL Spirit. MARTA is the best example. If this city (and the surrounding area) actually had decent public transport, things would be so different.

Start times on weeknights don't matter to me, 7;00 or 7:30 I'll still be there. Weekend start times (even 1:00 pm) don't really bother me either. I know its cooler to do entertainment stuff at night, but for me when hockey starts the rest of the world stops, time included.

Start times really don't matter to me. Even getting up early, a half hour doesn't make a difference one way or the other.

Sorry Monsieur, but your ITP-centric view is wrong. An arena in Gwinnett or Alpharetta would be much better, because it would locate the team closer to the bulk of the people who want to go see them. That being said, it'll never happen. As DW said, the arena itself is the anchor that will prevent the team from being moved to another market.

Being an old Knights fan, I of course support yelling "Knights" during the anthem.

Musically, I like the tune of Oh, Canada better than the Star Spangled Banner, but not by much. However, it is funny that Oh, Canada said that they "Stand on Guard for Thee" when it's actually the US military that stands on guard to protect Canada.

Did you know that we actually stole the tune for the Star Spangled Banner from the theme song of a London Gentleman's Association? Just another way to thumb our nose at the redcoats.

Arenas should be downtown.

Period.

FrenchCatalogues said...

You know what happens to arenas in the suburbs? They turn into the New York Islanders.

FrenchCatalogues said...

This is the ATLANTA Thrashers, not the Gwinnett Discovery Place Jimmy Carter Boulevards.

I can't imagine a weekend post-game outing in the suburbs. Where the hell goes one go? Game and then Chili's?

Mortimer Peacock said...

Monsieur-

Amen. Might as well relocate the Rangers to Westchester County or some shit.

Maybe there actually should be a suburban team, so they could be rivals with the city Thrashers. Like the downtown Kings versus the suburban Ducks.

Actually, I think the ATL train station should be moved underneath the CNN Center and Philips like how Penn is under Madison Square Garden, the trains already go under. I think I should become mayor or something.

i live in athens so if they moved the arena to gwinnett or the like i would love it because it would allow me to attend WAY more games than the one or two i currently make it to per season. i have no problem with paying for tickets to games its the drive that kills it for me.

also beer = nectar of the gods

also ive never had a beer form this mythical gorins, how much and i assume you cant take them into the arena.

Big Shooter said...

Swegs,

The beer is $5 for pretty much what amounts to a Big Gulp.

And no, you can't take it inside.
